This is a very clear introduction to Marx. It calls a spade a spade, not a determinate implement in the pre-bourgeois agricultural production process. The book starts with Marx as a human being . private life and public life. It then presents his main ideas in a way that is as simple as possible, but not any simpler. It bypasses the secondary literature; returns to Marx’s original work; explains and criticises it; and says which parts are dead and which are still relevant. At the end are three appendices. The first . ‘The Attraction of Marxism’ . is written for those who wonder ‘what’s so good about Marx anyway?’ The second, called ‘Violence, Negativity and Failure’, deals with the important question: ‘Did Marx lead on to Stalin?’ The third gives detailed references for further reading.
